Chemistry Basics: Understanding the Periodic Table and Chemical Bonding
Chemistry is the science of matter and its transformations. Once you understand the basics, everything else falls into place.
The Periodic Table — Your Roadmap
The periodic table organises all elements by their atomic number (number of protons). Rows (periods) show energy levels. Columns (groups) show similar properties.
Atoms and Their Structure
Every atom has a nucleus (protons + neutrons) and an electron shell. The number of electrons in the outer shell determines the element's chemical behaviour.
Types of Chemical Bonds
Ionic bonding: Metal + Non-metal (e.g., NaCl). Covalent bonding: Non-metal + Non-metal (e.g., H₂O). Metallic bonding: Metal + Metal.
Chemical Equations
A chemical equation must be balanced: the same number of atoms on both sides. 2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O. Two hydrogen molecules plus one oxygen molecule yield two water molecules.
*Tip: Use molecular model kits (physical or digital). Seeing 3D structures makes abstract concepts tangible and much easier to remember.*
