Grammar School, Comprehensive, or Secondary Modern? Finding the Right Path
After primary school comes the question: which school is right? The answer depends on many factors — not just grades.
Grammar School (Gymnasium)
The grammar school leads to the Abitur (A-levels) in 8 or 9 years. It's the most academically demanding school type with a broad subject range, foreign languages from Year 5, and preparation for university.
Secondary Modern School (Realschule)
Leads to a secondary school certificate in 6 years. Offers a good balance between theory and practice. With a good qualification, transition to grammar school is possible.
Comprehensive School (Gesamtschule)
Combines all school types under one roof. Students are grouped by ability in different courses but can achieve all qualifications.
Our Advice
There's no "best" school — only the best school for your child. A student who's overwhelmed at grammar school will be frustrated. One who's under-challenged at secondary modern will be bored. Observe your child: How do they handle frustration? How independently do they work?
