Improving Concentration: 10 Tips for Focused Learning Without Distraction
The average attention span of teenagers has dropped significantly over the past 20 years. But concentration can be trained.
1. Phone Out of the Room
Not on silent, not face-down — completely out of the room. Studies show: just having a phone visible reduces cognitive performance by 10-15%.
2. Fixed Study Times
The brain adapts to routines. If you study every day from 3-5 pm, it automatically switches to "study mode" after a few weeks.
3. Drink Water
Even mild dehydration (1-2%) measurably reduces concentration. Keep a water bottle on your desk.
4. Movement Breaks
After 30-45 minutes of studying: 5 minutes of movement. Star jumps, stairs, fresh air. Movement supplies oxygen to the brain.
5. The Right Environment
Tidy desk, good lighting (ideally daylight), comfortable temperature (18-22°C). Chaos on the desk = chaos in the head.
6. Background Music — Yes or No?
Instrumental music or nature sounds can help. Music with lyrics (especially in your native language) distracts the language centre and is counterproductive.
7. To-Do Lists
Write down what you want to achieve today before studying. This gives the brain a clear goal.
8. Enough Sleep
Teenagers need 8-10 hours of sleep. Studying while tired wastes time.
