French at School: Why It's Worth It and How to Get Better
French is the second most commonly learned foreign language in many European countries. And it's well worth the effort!
Why French Matters
French is an official language in 29 countries. In many international organisations (UN, EU), French is a working language. And: those who speak French find it much easier to learn other Romance languages (Spanish, Italian).
The 3 Biggest Hurdles
1. Pronunciation: French has many silent letters and nasal sounds. Tip: Listen to lots of French music and podcasts.
2. Grammar: The tenses and adjective agreements are complex. Tip: Learn rules with example sentences, not in isolation.
3. Vocabulary: French words often look very different from English. Tip: Many words are similar to English! "famille" = family, "musique" = music.
Effective Learning Methods
Watch French films with subtitles. Start with French subtitles, not English. Use apps like Duolingo as a supplement. Write a diary in French — even if it's just 3 sentences.
