Transition from Primary to Secondary School: How to Make It Smooth
The move from primary to secondary school is one of the biggest changes in a young student's life.
What Changes
Instead of one main teacher, there are now many subject teachers. The building is bigger, the timetable more complex. Homework becomes more demanding and expectations increase.
Start Preparing Early
As early as Year 4, children can practice working independently: organising their school bag, keeping track of homework, preparing for tests without parental help.
Social Aspects
The biggest worry for many children: "Will I find friends?" Talk to your child about this. Most children quickly find their place in the new class.
Subject Challenges
English or a second foreign language starts. Mathematics becomes more abstract. German demands longer, more structured texts. These transitions need support.
*Our advice: The first few months are an adjustment period. Don't panic if grades drop slightly at first. Most students find their footing within the first term.*
